About Wunanbiri

Culture, community and children at our heart.

For more than thirty years, Wunanbiri has been a trusted place of learning and belonging for Aboriginal children and families in inner Sydney.

Our story

Founded by community, for community — since 1993

Wunanbiri Preschool Incorporated was established on 12 August 1993 as an Aboriginal community-controlled early learning service. From the beginning, our purpose has been clear: to provide Aboriginal specialist educational and family support through a dedicated preschool program in Alexandria.

Over three decades, generations of local families have trusted Wunanbiri to give their children a warm, culturally grounded and high-quality start to their education. We remain a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity, reinvesting everything into the children and families we serve.

Our Mission

To deliver culturally safe, specialist early childhood education and family support that nurtures the identity, wellbeing and learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families.

Our Vision

A community where every Aboriginal child begins school strong, proud and confident — deeply connected to their culture, their family and their future.

Our philosophy

Learning through play, grounded in culture

We believe children learn best when they feel safe, valued and free to explore. Our play-based approach follows the Early Years Learning Framework while placing Aboriginal culture, language and connection to Country at the centre of every experience.

  • Culture first — identity and belonging are the foundation of everything we do.
  • Child-led — we follow children's curiosity and celebrate their strengths.
  • Family partnership — parents and carers are their child's first and most important teacher.
  • Community connection — we learn together with Elders and local services.
